Like many of Marvel's Netflix series, the upcoming Punisher spinoff series takes the genre to some drastically different places than the blockbuster films. Like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, the Marvel heroes on Netflix are more grounded in realism; The Punisher, Netflix's latest entry into their Marvel collaboration, is as real as it gets.

In the trailer for The Punisher—which is dropping on November 17—Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) is an emotionally damaged soldier after misuse by the military. Reeling from the trauma after his family is killed, he's trying to find his purpose after the battle—looking for something to fight for.

And by the looks of this trailer, The Punisher has more in common with gritty war mission films like Zero Dark Thirty, with the emotional battle trauma of something like American Sniper.

This is going to be a dark, bloody series. Even Bernthal himself said so, telling Entertainment Weekly:

"He’s up against all of it. During this show, nobody is who they appear to be… This season is much darker as it goes, it gets darker and darker and more visceral. The show takes you on this journey of Frank becoming more and more human again and then shutting off and shutting off and going back to what works for him, and the place where he kind of belongs, and I think that’s a place of solitude and of darkness and destruction. It’s going to get into as dark and as brutal a place as you’ve ever seen in the Marvel world, I can promise you that."
