Bruce Lee's Daughter Would Prefer Tarantino To "Shut Up" About Her Dad

Bruce Lee's daughter did not like Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In... Hollywood has come with the usual rumblings of controversy which tend to coalesce around his films, plus some extra ones thanks to how the story treats real-life figures like Sharon Tate and Bruce Lee.

Tarantino has already defended his characterisation of Lee as a blowhard who reckoned he could destroy Muhammad Ali, which didn't sit well with Lee's daughter Shannon. There's a fair bit of ill will here from both parties. What could Tarantino do to smooth things over?

"He could shut up about it," she told Variety. "That would be really nice. Or he could apologize or he could say, 'I don’t really know what Bruce Lee was like. I just wrote it for my movie. But that shouldn’t be taken as how he really was.'"

Tarantino had suggested that his fictionalised version of Lee was based in fact, but while Shannon was careful to point out that her dad wasn't a "perfect man" whose supreme confidence could have been misconstrued as arrogance, she still isn't having any of Tarantino's explanation.

"One of the things that's troubling in his response is that, on the one hand, he wants to put this forward as fact and, on the other hand, he wants to stay in fiction," she said.

Shannon went on: "[Tarantino] can portray Bruce Lee however he wanted to, and he did. But it’s a little disingenuous for him to say, 'Well, this is how he was, but this is a fictional movie, so don’t worry too much about it.'"
