Celebrity Breakups and Divorces That Came Out of Nowhere
Divorce, annulments, and almost-marriages

We're big on family values. It’s no wonder the Philippines is the only country in the world—aside from the Vatican—that still doesn’t have a divorce law. How often do you hear a tita saying that marriage isn’t like hot rice you can spit back out after your tongue has been burnt? And while that advice does make sense (We’re looking at you, Ariana,) sometimes a breakup can creep up on you faster than you can say "Taylor Swift."

Chris Pratt and Anna Faris

Funny couple Chris and Anna met on the set of Take Me Home Tonight back in 2007. Their characters in the movie didn’t end up together, but IRL, they did. In 2017, after eight years of marriage, Chris and Anna called it quits. They announced this heartbreaking news over social media in a joint statement that said they were “legally separating.”

“We tried hard for a long time, and we’re really disappointed. Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake we want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward,” the statement read. “We still have love for each other, will always cherish our time together and continue to have the deepest respect for one another.”

Hayley Williams and Chad Gilbert

It was a match made in punk rock heaven. After 10 years together and many beautiful songs inspired by this union, Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams and New Found Glory musician Chad Gilbert realized that they can’t make a harmonious home. They announced their separation in a joint Instagram post in July on their respective accounts.

“The two of us have been together for the better part of 10 years. We’ve grown up together and we’ve been beside each other through a lot of goodness and a lot of challenges,” they said.

“Marriage is not for the faint of heart. Love is an absolute risk. And it’s up to each of us to stay hopeful even when the outcome isn’t what we’d originally hoped for.”

Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian

The on-again, off-again couple makes headlines every time they break up and make up. When Chyna was pregnant with Rob’s child, rumors floated about that she was cheating on him. After they have canceled their wedding plans, Rob went on a social media rampage, posting explicit photos of his former fiancée. Chyna later on filed restraining orders against the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star.

The two share a joint custody of their daughter, Dream, named after the exact opposite of what their relationship has become.

Scarlett Johansson and Romain Dauriac

2017 was an overall bad year for Marvel stars. Aside from Chris Pratt and Chris Evans breaking up with their respective loves, the Black Widow has also put the veil on her relationship.

Scarlett filed for divorce from her French husband Romain Dauriac. Scarlett and Romain were married for two years. In her divorce papers, Johansson expressed her intent to have the primary physical custody of their two-year-old daughter Rose Dorothy.

John Cena and Nikki Bella

Fans were knocked out by love when these professional wrestlers got engaged in April 2017 during a couples' match. Unfortunately, John Cena and Nikki Bella called it off just weeks before their wedding date.

In a statement released by Nikki, she said that the decision was difficult and they “continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another.” The couple, who had been together for six years, asked their fans to respect their privacy during the aftermath of their relationship.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan

The couple who danced their way into each other’s hearts “have lovingly chosen to separate” after nearly nine years of marriage.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan met on the set of 2006 dance movie Step Up and they’ve been each other’s best cheerleaders ever since. Despite rumors of a third party, the two clarified that there were “no secrets nor salacious events” that sparked the breakup.

“Just two best-friends realizing it's time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible,” they wrote.

Alicia Silverstone and Christopher Jarecki

You would think that after 20 years, ‘90s stars Alicia Silverstone and Christopher Jarecki would last forever. However, they filed for divorce in May 2017.

A rep from Alicia’s camp said that the couple “still deeply love and respect each other and remain very close friends.”

“They have a son together who they will continue to co-parent,” the statement read.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux

And here were are thinking Ross had it bad. After only two and a half year of marriage and a total of seven years as a couple, Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have officially split.

Jennifer’s publicist released the statement announcing their separation to quell the speculations about why the stars broke up.

“This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship,” the statement read.

Jennifer’s divorce happened just a year after ex-husband’s Brad Pitt’s separation from Angelina Jolie, the woman he left her for.

Sunshine Dizon and Timothy Tan

In 2010, Kapuso actress Sunshine Dizon married non-showbiz boyfriend Timothy Tan. In the years to follow, she starred in the surprise hit Ika-6 na Utos about a cheating husband. In an ironic twist of fate, her real life started mirroring her onscreen story of a wronged wife. In 2016, Sunshine accused Timothy of concubinage. She also filed another case against him – violation of the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004.

A year later, she dropped these charges but she explicitly expressed that she still wishes to annul her marriage with Tim. The two, however, have made some amends and they can be seen together during their kids’ birthdays and other events.

Tricia Centenera and Gab Valenciano

If there were two people who loved to get married, it would be Tricia Centenera and Gab Valenciano. The handsome couple got married in a civil ceremony in the US in 2014 and the following year, they got married two more times in the Philippines. That must mean they are totally in love and they will live happily ever after, right? Not really. In 2016, Tricia and Gab separated amid cheating rumors. It took several more years before they could talk about what happened.

In her blog, Tricia even defended her ex-husband against bashers. She wrote that while he had “broken” her, she didn’t let him ruin her. That choice was hers.

"I can now call him a friend. Even though the expectation is that as his ex-wife I should hate him, I honestly don't," she wrote in her blog.
