9 New Filipino Indie Films to Catch at This Month's C1 Originals Festival

Including one feature-length movie that was shot entirely on iPhone.

October is shaping up to be a busy month for moviegoers in Metro Manila, as two major film festivals will be running back-to-back to the end of the month.

The first is this year's Cinema One Originals, which starts this Friday, October 12, and runs until October 21, at which point it will immediately give way to the QCinema International Film Festival. Both festivals have their own competitions for new, original, Filipino films, which means there will be absolutely no shortage of reasons to head to theaters this month.

To kick things off, here are the competition entries for C1 Originals: Nine new features from Filipino filmmakers, fresh and seasoned alike:

Never Tear Us Apart by Whammy Alcazaren

The film formerly known as Fisting tells the story of an aging spy named Q who's on the hunt for The Shadow, a mysterious monster that preys on promiscuous women. It stars Ricky Davao, Meryl Soriano, and Jasmine Curtis-Smith; and was filmed entirely on iPhone.

Bagyong Bheverlyn by Charliebebs Gohetia

Rufa Mae Quinto stars opposite Edgar Allan Guzman in a comedy that tells the story of Bheverlynn, a heartbroken woman whose feelings become a supertyphoon.

A Short History of a Few Bad Things by Keith Deligero

A noir procedural set in Cebu, telling the story of a troubled detective who struggles to solve a series of grisly killings, while a deep conspiracy works to keep the truth just out of his reach.

Double Twisting, Double Back by Joseph Abello

Set in the world of adult male gymnastics, Double Twisting Double Back tells the story of two competitive best friends (Tony Labrusca and Joem Bascon) who try to outdo each other.

Hospicio by Bobby Bonifacio

After Leslie gets entangled in a drug-related shootout that leaves her little sister in a coma, she is entered into a rehabilitation center. Inside, she realizes that the rehab facility is more than what it seems to be. Hospicio stars Loisa Andalio and Ana Abad Santos.

Paglisan by Carl Papa

This animated film tells the story of Crisanto and Dolores, a married couple whose relationship is put to the test when when Crisanto is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease and Dolores sinks deeper into depression.

Mamu: And a Mother Too by Rod Singh

Rod Singh's entry describes itself as the "pinaka-savogue na comedy drama ngayong taon." The film tells the story of Mamu, a middle-aged transwoman who finds herself playing the role of surrogate mother to her transgender niece. The film starts Iyah Mina and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral's Arron Villaflor.

Pang-MMK by John Lapus

Based on an actual Maalaala Mo Kaya episode from over 20 years ago, John Lapus' Pang-MMK follows a young man who, after finding out his estranged father has suddenly died, must go to his funeral, only for things to take an unexpected turn.

Asuang by Rayn Brizuela

Asuang tells the story of a god in Bicolano folklore whose popularity has waned over the years. He turns to social media to rebrand himself, and then encounters a group of filmmakers looking to document his life. The film stars Alwyn Uytingco, Chai Fonacier, and Jun Sabayton.

The Cinema One Originals festival runs from October 12 to October 21 in Trinoma, Glorietta, Gateway, Santolan Town Plaza, Powerplant, in Cinelokal theaters (SM North EDSA, SM Megamall, SM Manila, and SM Sta.
