Ahead of its nationwide release tomorrow, October 10, Kip Oebanda's Liway—a film about one of the victims of Ferdinand Marcos' martial law—has compiled a playlist of songs that defined the Martial Law era.

Liway tells the story of Oebanda's own mother, who bore him when she was part of the underground resistance, and raised him while imprisoned the walls of a military detainment camp.

Glaiza de Castro stars in the film as Commander Liway herself, also lending her singing voice to the character. One of the film's first trailers for its Cinemalaya release in August sees Liway covering Asin's "Himig ng Pag-ibig".

The ballad is one of 14 songs in Martial Law Hugot, a Spotify playlist of songs from the '70s and '80s, curated for the movie and posted on its official Facebook page. Many of these songs were outright protest anthems, but each bears its own sociopolitical subtext. It includes the works of APO Hiking Society, Joey Ayala, and Celeste Legaspi.
