The mythos around Quentin Tarantino's Vega brothers—Vincent, played by John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, and Vic, played by Michael Madsen in Reservoir Dogs - is surely the biggest of any of Tarantino's characters.

Even the mention of the mooted team-up film Tarantino began to write but never finished, Double V Vega, is enough to get leave some fans staring into space for a few minutes, thinking about what might have gone down in that club in Amsterdam.

But there was nearly no Vincent Vega at all. Michael Madsen confirms in new documentary QT8: The First Eight that Tarantino wanted him to reprise Vic Vega in Pulp Fiction but that he had to turn the director down.

"I was already committed to Wyatt Earp," Madsen explains in the film. "And now, here's Quentin, wants me to do Pulp Fiction. And they were both going at the same time."

But he's doesn't harbour any regrets about having to give up the role, not least because he was delighted to save Travolta from a lifetime of Look Who's Talking films. Sadly it didn't save him from Gotti and the run of stinkers he's on at the minute, but still.

"Isn't it true that part of John Travolta being in it, it became John’s comeback?" Madsen said. "He was doing movies about talking babies! And suddenly he’s Vincent Vega! He had that wig on. No one had seen Travolta with a f***ing gun. That’s a huge, huge, huge reason why the movie worked."
