11 Ridiculous Titles Originally Given To Major Movies

Who wants to go see '$3,000' tonight?

It's entirely common for movies to have working titles. Think Solo: A Star Wars Movie, which had the working title Red Cup when it started shooting but was never seriously in any trouble of being actually called that. However, it's also not unusual for movies to start with a genuine title that is changed late in the day, sometimes after test audiences have seen it in action. Here are 11 of the latter which we kind of wish made the cut.

1| Hancock was originally called... Tonight, He Comes

The original script about the troubled, foul-mouthed drunk superhero was a lot darker and less Hollywood-friendly. This title was a double entendre based on a sex scene, as well as an ominous warning.

.

2| Pretty Woman was originally called... $3,000

The original script was apparently a lot darker than the rom-com we ended up with, and had a title that reflected it.

.

3| Annie Hall was originally called... Anhedonia

Which is apparently a word meaning the inability to experience pleasure.

.

4| The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was originally called... Head Cheese

Certainly it was one title director Tobe Hooper was playing with. Head cheese is an actual food and it's mentioned in the film by the Hitcher ("You like head cheese? My brother makes it real good!"). It also just sounds disgusting, though Chain Saw was no doubt more commercial.

.

5| While You Were Sleeping was originally called... The Coma Guy

Seriously, The Coma Guy? It's actually a line in the script, but fortunately someone smart at Disney thought this maybe wasn't the most sensitive title for a feel-good rom-com.

.

6| Edge of Tomorrow was originally called... All You Need is Kill

The movie is based on a novel called All You Need is Kill, although director Doug Liman said that was only ever a working title for the movie (despite it being announced under this name). At least it's less generic than Edge of Tomorrow...

7| The 13th Warrior was originally called... Eaters of the Dead

John McTiernan's action adventure is based on the Michael Crichton novel called Eaters of the Dead.

.

8| 50/50 was originally called... I'm with Cancer

The movie is based on a true story and this was the original title of the script by Will Reiser. Director Jonathan Levine worried that it would scare off audiences. "I think it was a clever title but I hated it because I don't think anyone would ever see a movie called that," he said.

.

9| Blade Runner was originally called... Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Well, it IS the name of the Philip K Dick short story that inspired the movie. Not a terribly palatable title, the studio surmised (though it's not as if Blade Runner was a storming success at release anyway).

10| Takers was originally called... Bone Deep

Bone Deep sounds rude. But Takers doesn't really mean anything at all at face value. Which might explain why you've never heard of it, even though it stars Paul Walker and Idris Elba.

.

11| The Switch was originally called... The Baster

The original title is kind of appropriate for a movie about a guy who swaps out his best mate's sperm donor sample for his own. Star Jennifer Aniston agreed, saying: ''I wished it was still called The Baster, it changed because of 375 tests and meetings and focus groups. Cool names like The Baster get switched to The Switch."
