Regine Velasquez looked back on her encounter with 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey, describing the international singer as “salbahe” and “nuknuan ng yabang” (ill-mannered and very arrogant).
In an interview with BrightWin Ninangs Live!, Velasquez narrated the unfortunate encounter with Lachey when his boy band visited the Philippines in 1999.
“Iyang si Nick Lachey, nuknukan ng yabang. Nuknukan ng yabang! But the other guys are really cool."
(“That Nick Lachey is extremely arrogant. Extremely arrogant!”)
Velasquez emphasized how she deplored Lachey: “Iyong Nick Lachey ang salbahe. Ang salbahe! So sabi ko, sige ka, mamaya humanda ka sakin. Kinain ko talaga siya!”
(“Nick Lachey was so arrogant. So arrogant! I said to myself, you wait and see. I ate him up!”)
Velasquez was referring to how she drowned out Lachey’s performance when she performed with 98 Degrees on the now-defunct show S.O.P.
Regine on Nick: ‘You’re in our country, don’t act like a diva.’
“Kasi minsan yung iba hindi naman ako nangangain eh, relax-relax lang. Eh yung kanta nila ang taas eh, tapos biruin mo, umpisa pa lang, nagmamagaling siya! Sabi ko, humanda ka sakin, hindi ka maririnig! At hindi na talaga siya narinig! Nainis ako kasi, parang, nasa country ka namin, huwag kang umarte-arte diyan!”
(“I don’t usually drown out co-performers, just chill. But their song had such high notes, and then during rehearsals, he was acting like a diva. I said, ‘I’ll put you in your place!’ And I did!
I got annoyed because he’s in our country, he shouldn’t act like a diva!”)
