The biggest stars of ABS-CBN sympathized with the thousands upon thousands of employees that stand to be affected by the network's retrenchment on August 31. Sharon Cuneta, Lea Salonga, Gary Valenciano, Ogie Alcasid, and Bianca Gonzalez are just some that have appealed for prayers for workers that will be let go by the company.

ABS-CBN's retrenchment comes after the network's franchise renewal application was denied by Congress. Because of this, the largest part of ABS-CBN's operations and subsidiaries were halted. This comes while millions of Filipinos are affected by four months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Read the statements of Sharon Cuneta, Lea Salonga, and more celebrities below.

Sharon Cuneta

Losing one’s job, for whatever reason, is a very painful experience. When it happens because of unjust persecution, and in this case directly inflicted by your own government and its elected officials because of selfish or political reasons, ang sakit sakit.

Many people in ABS-CBN have dedicated their entire lives to their jobs. There are many employees who, even if they receive separation pay, can’t do without regular income. Many work in specialized jobs and might not find similar work. Many are no longer in the prime of their career and will find it hard to compete with younger job seekers.

All have families that depend on them.

There hasn’t been a day that I haven’t cried since the cruel decision of Congress. I cry in grief, anger, and frustration.

Lea Salonga

Please say a prayer for the many men and women of ABS-CBN as well as their families, that they weather what might possibly be the biggest challenge of their lives. Mahigpit na yakap, mga Kapamilya.

Whether you were in favor of the shutdown or not is immaterial. Pray for them anyway. To be suddenly out of a job is not something to wish upon another human being, especially in the middle of this seemingly never-ending pandemic.

Not a day goes by that these people aren’t on my mind. May God bless you all in ways you have never yet experienced. I may not have known too many of you personally; or maybe I’ve just seen you walking the hallways of ABSCBN, but it still doesn’t seem real that this has happened to you. I pray the Lord makes our paths cross again. I hope I can help put a smile on your faces once more.

Abba Father, please take care of those who will lose their jobs and even those not involved with our company that have lost their jobs too. Times are really difficult. We humbly bow down before you and repent for what we may have done to offend your holy name. We ask for forgiveness and ask for your mercy and grace for all of us that are having a difficult time. We hold on to your promise that you shall heal our land from all these and take care of each one of us. In Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.

Bianca Gonzalez
