Vincent Willem van Gogh, more popularly known as Van Gogh, was a Dutch post-impressionist painter. He was born in 1853 and died in 1890—the same period in history when Jose Rizal also lived. Van Gogh was born to an upper-middle-class family. His interest in visual arts began at an early age, when his mother encouraged him to draw. His first drawings were characteristically expressive, a quality that would be magnified in his later works.

Many decades after his death, Van Gogh would be recognized as one of the most sought after painters of the 19th century. Today, his works transcend generations, with young and old recognizing his most famous works and style. In 1990, a Van Gogh painting became one of the most expensive artworks ever sold: "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" sold for $82.5 million ($158.2 million in today’s value).

Today, Van Gogh remains a powerful inspiration not only for artists but also for the general populace. One of the offshoots of his creativity is a lifelike exhibit of his works.

The art exhibit makes use of Sensory4, a unique system that combines multi-channel motion graphics, cinema-quality surround sound, and up to 40 high-definition projectors to provide one of the most exciting multi-screen environments in the world. The resulting experience is dynamic, informative, and visually spectacular. Incredibly detailed images of Van Gogh’s most iconic works flow through the mass of projectors and merge with digital surround sound to saturate the space in a breathtaking immersive display.

The exhibit was made possible by the Bonifacio Art Foundation, Inc. (BAFI), a non-profit organization. BAFI is the organization that also conceived, created, and operates The Mind Museum, the BGC Arts Center, and the BGC Public Art Program.

This year, BAFI worked with Grande Exhibitions, for the Van Gogh Alive exhibit. Grande Exhibitions, the creator and promoter of Van Gogh Alive, specializes in the creation, design, production, promotion, and installation of large-scale exhibitions. Its exhibitions have traveled to over 130 cities across six continents, to audiences in excess of 15 million people.

“Van Gogh Alive is not Van Gogh gaining new relevance 150 years later, but the same genius up close and personal, navigating your soul in the language of nuanced light—from tender to cobalt blues, reticent creams to raging yellows, with the musical genius of Bach, Schubert, Vivaldi, among others,” said Maria Isabel Garcia, managing director and curator of BAFI.

People are encouraged to immerse themselves in Van Gogh’s most iconic works bathed in contemporary treatment. “The experience transcends the artificial borders we build for ourselves or the ones that set us apart from others,” said Garcia.
