What if seeing a play once meant you had only seen one version of it? That is the invitation of El Fuego del Alma, Porvenir's Filipino adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke. It is written by Eljay Castro Deldoc and directed by Mark Mirando.
It is common knowledge that every theatrical performance is unique, driven by audience reaction, small tweaks in lights and sounds, and overall vibe. But El Fuego del Alma takes and embraces this further by featuring changing environments and rotating lead performers.

Day and Night, Changing Seasons
The difference in El Fuego del Alma's performances is day and night, metaphorically and literally. Some shows take place in daylight, when natural light pours through the glass walls of Sine Pop. Others take place after sundown, when the venue is enveloped in warm light and deep shadows.
The production also exists in two seasonal worlds: dry and wet seasons. The Philippine climate shapes the rhythm of the play, with the oppressive heat heightening the already simmering emotions and the melancholy of the rain complementing moments of reflection.

Same Actors, Different Lives
Unlike usual productions where one role has two or three alternates, El Fuego del Alma challenges the concept of casting. The actors portraying Juanito also perform Archie in one production. The actresses portraying Alma also portray Rosa in another.
As performers move between opposing characters day in and day out, they bring with them the baggage of these personalities. This creates new chemistry, new relationships, and new emotional discoveries as the run dates progress.
