Everything You Need to Know About Art Fair Philippines 2021

The first digital edition of the fair goes live on May 6.

It's that time of year again. Art Fair Philippines is back and we're going to experience it in a new way: digitally. "This year's fair will showcase art that suits the platform," said Trickie Lopa, co-founder of Art Fair Philippines. From May 6 to 15, the fair will be available online at artfairphilippines.com. As always, there's plenty to look forward to.

From participating exhibitors to the various activities, it's a full schedule of art, entertainment, and more. Here's everything you need to know about Art Fair Philippines 2021.

How is the first digital Art Fair Philippines going to work?

It's official: Art Fair Philippines is going digital. For the 2021 edition of the fair, you'll be able to experience everything through a collective virtual shared space and an alternate reality aptly called the Metaverse.

Though Art Fair Philippines promises a brand new experience, the same idea behind the fair remains. A total of 43 local and foreign exhibitors will showcase various artworks—only this time in online viewing rooms with videos produced in collaboration with Globe Studios.

Perhaps the biggest thing to look forward to is the fair's spotlight on digital art. No, not digital photography and animation. We're talking about non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Art Fair Philippines is presenting the NFT 101 Showcase which will include an introduction to crypto basics, buying an NFT, and getting started in the crypto art community. Here's a quick read on NFTs in case you don't want to go into the fair totally clueless.

What is there to look forward to this year?

The people behind Art Fair Philippines have prepared many interesting events within the fair including ArtFairPH/Film, ArtFairPH/Open Studios, ArtFairPH/Photos, ArtFairPH/Projects, ArtFairPH/Residencies, ArtFairPH/Talks, and ArtFairPH/Tours.

ArtFairPH/Film will tie into the focus on digital art. "This section of the fair is developed in partnership with Daata, a digital platform that commissions original digital artworks by established and emerging artists, allowing viewers to stream or download high-quality digital artworks on any device," the fair said in a release.

While talks, open studios, and tours will make use of the virtual setting to conduct workshops, there will also be live demonstrations, and a look inside Moira Lang and Alfredo Equillo's studios. According to the fair, the sections will help expand visitor's appreciation of contemporary art with the help of the Ateneo Art Gallery, Museum Foundation of the Philippines, and the international publication, Art Review.

The newest section, ArtFairPH/Residencies, is an artist residency program project that is open to all Filipino artists. Five of them will be chosen based on their portfolios to be presented at next year's edition of Art Fair Philippines.
