Her legacy remains.

Before there was Twilight or Fifty Shades of Gray, there was Anne Rice. The author, who recently passed away from complications related to a stroke, championed the modern supernatural genre as well as erotica, with her most well-known books being Interview with the Vampire and The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty.

Rice was a singular author who dared to venture into uncharted territories long before they were popular. The Vampire Chronicles singlehandedly revived the vampire genre and her erotic novels under pseudonyms A. N. Roquelaure and Anne Rampling have amassed cult followings.

An unmatched gothic writer of her generation, Rice leaves behind a legacy of over 30 novels and a reminder to reject conformity and chase desires.

Here are the best quotes from the unapologetic Anne Rice.

"I know nothing of God or the Devil. I have never seen a vision nor learned a secret that would damn or save my soul."

"The only pain in pleasure is the pleasure in pain."

"I’m always looking, and I’m always asking questions."

"Obsession led me to write. I’d been that way with every book I’ve ever written. I become completely consumed by a theme, by characters, by a desire to meet a challenge."

"The world doesn’t need any more mediocrity or hedged bets."

"We’re frightened of what makes us different."

"The vampires have always been metaphors to me. They’ve always been vehicles through which I can express things I have felt very, very deeply."

"The process by which you become a writer is a pretty lonely one. We don’t have a group apprenticeship like a violinist might training for an orchestra."

From The Vampire Chronicles

"None of us really changes over time. We only become more fully what we are."

"Evil is a point of view. We are immortal. And what we have before us are the rich feasts that conscience cannot appreciate and mortal men cannot know without regret. God kills, and so shall we; indiscriminately. He takes the richest and the poorest, and so shall we; for no creatures under God are as we are, none so like Him as ourselves, dark angels not confined to the stinking limits of hell but wandering His earth and all its kingdoms."

"It's an awful truth that suffering can deepen us, give a greater luster to our colors, a richer resonance to our words."

"We breathe the light, we breathe the music, we breathe the moment as it passes through us."

On Her Inevitable Death

"At my own funeral, I’d like to be laid out in a coffin in my own house. I would like my coffin to be put in the double parlor, and I would like all the flowers to be white."
