A First Edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Was Just Auctioned Off for P23 Million

There are some very wealthy Harry Potter fans out there.

The most expensive Harry Potter has just been sold to an anonymous buyer for a whopping $471,000 (P23.7 million). The mysterious buyer—no doubt a wealthy Potterhead—is now the owner of the “most expensive commercially published 20th-century work of fiction,” according to Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.

The Harry Potter book in question is a first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The hardback 1997 British edition is one of only 500 copies in existence and is in pristine condition with the very first cover design on the front.

The auction house originally pegged the pre-sale estimate to be roughly $70,000, only to be surprised when the final bid was six times their predicted amount. The $471,000 purchase now holds the record for the highest auction price for a Harry Potter first edition as previous books have sold for just under $140,000. Note that current prices for Harry Potter books on the market are only roughly $20 each.

Almost 25 years since the day Harry Potter was first released to the world, the book series has all the makings of a classic, and this impressive auction sale might just cement that status. Despite being published only 24 years ago, Harry Potter has become the best-selling book series in history with 500 million copies sold. Each book has sold between 60 to 120 million copies individually, and only The Hobbit beats the Philosopher’s Stone for the title of the best-selling individual book of all time.
