Here's What You Can Expect at the NBS Readers & Writers Festival

It's heaven for budding writers and bibliophiles.

Every year, National Bookstore holds a three-day literary festival at the Raffles Makati. The hotel's ballrooms and conference rooms become a venue for readers to meet their favorite authors, for aspiring writers to learn from the greats, and for intellectuals to geek out over all things related to publishing.

The highlight of this year's gathering is the Author Spotlight, where acclaimed writers Pierce Brown and Mark Z. Danielewski will hold discussions and book signings.

Brown is known for his dystopian Red Rising trilogy, in which humans have colonized Mars and society is segregated into color-coded castes.

Danielewski is known for harnessing an unusual format for his complex (or, depending on your opinion, convoluted) plots: text printed backwards or at all kinds of angles, changing fonts, full-color illustrations, and pages and pages of footnotes. His books, such as The House of Leaves and The Familiar series, have attained cult status.

The panel talks by local authors and industry experts look promising as well. If you can't wait to see the film adaptation of F.H. Batacan's Smaller and Smaller Circles, you'll be interested in "Smaller and Smaller Circles: From Book to Film." The talk panelists are producer and screenplay co-writer Ria Limjap and Carla Humphries, who plays Joanna Bonifacio.

Aspiring food writers can check out "Tasting Words: Food Writing Today," while art lovers should attend "What We Talk About When We Write About Art." If you're a serious literary geek, nerd out with likeminded folk at "Keeping Up With Current Literary Trends: Open Discussions on Diversity, Cultural Representation, and Other Bookish Disputes."

The National Book Store Readers and Writers Festival starts today and runs until August 27. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and continues throughout the day, and admission is completely free.
