Analyzing Mondrian: Using Tools of the Future to Decode the Past

His work inspired generations of artists.

Piet Mondrian's compositions of black lines framing geometric patterns in primary colors of red, blue, white, and yellow changed the landscape of Modern Art. His work influenced the Bauhaus movement and Minimalism, among others.

Conservators at Fondation Beyeler in Basel, Switzerland have been working to restore four Mondrian paintings, with research under the patronage of La Prairie.

“The more I get involved with Mondrian, the more I am fascinated by this painter,” said Ulf Küster, senior curator at the foundation. “He is full of surprises.”

The conservators have been using technology to discover more about Mondrian's artistic process, as seen in this video.
