You Can Now View the Louvre's Entire Art Collection Online
The Musée du Louvre has just made more of its collection available online with the launch of a new database and a new website. Both sites went live late last week to, as the Louvre says, "bring the richness of the Louvre collections to the world's fingertips."
The collections database brings together the museum's collection all in one place. Yep, we're talking works from the Louvre and the Musée National Eugène-Delacroix, sculptures from the Tuileries and Carrousel gardens, and ‘MNR’ works (Musées Nationaux Récupération, or National Museums Recovery). Currently, the database has more than 482,000 entries so you'll probably never run out of things to discover.
Then, there's the new Louvre site that's been revamped to three main sections: visit, explore, and what's on. The site—available in French, English, Spanish, and Chinese—focuses on works and their dedicated galleries through images and videos.
"Today, the Louvre is dusting off its treasures, even the least-known," says Jean-Luc Martinez, president-director of the Musée du Louvre. "For the first time, anyone can access the entire collection of works from a computer or smartphone for free, whether they are on display in the museum, on loan, even long-term, or in storage."
He continues, "The Louvre’s stunning cultural heritage is all now just a click away! I am sure that this digital content is going to further inspire people to come to the Louvre to discover the collections in person."
