Unknown to many, actor and now Ormoc City mayor Richard Gomez has been an art enthusiast for over 30 years. “I've been collecting works from painters since the '80s when I started working and earning money. Most of what I've bought are still with me up to now,” Gomez said in a report by GMA News.

Recently, the actor drew flak for one of his works, titled “OOOOHH,” which depicts a yellow male genitalia on a black background. Netizens branded the artwork as crude, but were more surprised with the painting’s almost P200,000 price tag. The 48"x48" painting was created using black and yellow acrylic paint on wood.

Gomez downplayed the criticism on his artwork, and explained the meaning behind the work. In a text message to GMA News, he said that the artwork is “self-explanatory. Given a deeper thought, it shows lust, self-pleasure and power.”

Last year, Gomez exhibited the same painting at Art Fair Philippines under the gallery Secret Fresh. In an interview with PEP.ph, Gomez said that it was fellow actor Ian Veneracion who influenced him to pursue painting as a hobby.

Artist defends Gomez' work

Other artists have defended Gomez's work, saying that people should not be so quick to criticize the artwork. "Why are people so angry with Goma's painting? Artists, of all people, should be the ones who understand and respect someone's work," said Nasser Lubay. In 2015, Lubay's work titled Rebirth was recognized in Berlin’s Art Forum Week  in Germany. It was part of the works considered for the Celeste Prize 2009, an international prize for contemporary arts and a network for art professionals.
