'Mortal Kombat 11' is Coming, and Here's What We Know

Everyone's favorite gory fighter is back.

The original blood-and-guts fighter is back. Series co-creator Ed Boon revealed the trailer for Mortal Kombat 11 at last week's Game Awards, and at a time when reality feels endlessly annoying and awful, it looks to be the perfect opportunity to work out all your worldly aggressions from the safety of your home console.

The trailer sees an evil-looking Raiden hammering on Scorpion in an expectedly hellish and bleak landscape. Though we don’t get any gameplay in the trailer, it may be safe to say that 11 is a continuation of the much-loved Mortal Kombat X, a game that ended with Raiden hungry for revenge.

Mortal Kombat, which focuses on the raging battle between the people of our world and invaders from the so-called Netherrealm, has been known as much for its over-the-top story and schlocky lore as it is embraced for its grindhouse aesthetic.

And on the gameplay side, according to the description in the official trailer, Mortal Kombat 11 emphasizes "Custom Character Variations," which "give you unprecedented control to customize the fighters and make them your own." It's not clear yet if these variations will be purely cosmetic, or if they'll have an actual effect on a character's stats or skillset, similar to Injustice 2, NetherRealm’s recent fighting game based on the DC Universe characters. The game also will have a brand new graphics engine and a roster of both new and "Klassic" fighters.

Mortal Kombat 11 is set to release in April 2019.
