The iPhone XS and XR haven't done the business Apple had hoped they'd do, but the last couple of days have brought a raft of reports about the next generation of iPhones.

The Wall Street Journal says that a new round of three models are on the way this year, and Apple insider site 9to5mac.com reports that Barclays bank has been briefing investors on features the new iPhones are expected to carry.

Here are the big take-homes.

Three new models

The iPhone 11 generation is expected to be made up of two OLED models and one cheaper LCD model, though that cheaper follow-up to the iPhone XR will get an upgraded dual-camera system.

Triple camera system

That dual-camera system is nothing compared to the biggest anticipated change with the iPhone 11: Barclays backs up the Wall Street Journal's suggestion that at least the biggest and most expensive 6.5-inch iPhone 11 variant will have three cameras for higher quality photos. That might mean the camera can shoot in 3D.

Improved Face ID

Apple is working on improving the front camera's flood illuminator, a bit of kit which helps the camera work out which part of an image is irrelevant background and which part is foreground, and maps your face in 3D to unlock the phone. So, a better flood illuminator would mean smoother and less laggy Face ID, and given that most iPhone owners are still a bit bemused as to what was so bad about unlocking their phone with a thumbprint that might finally win them over.

WiFi 6

"We believe the 2019 iPhone and Galaxy Series features new WiFi 6 (ax), which should be a moderate tailwind for AVGO [WiFi tech company Broadcom]," Barclays said in its assessment of whether investors should put their money into companies making kit for WiFi. WiFi 6 is faster than earlier generations, but also works better in crowded areas and drains your battery less.

No mention of 5G

The next generation of connectivity is the one thing that's missing from the leaked details, and matches with Bloomberg's suggestion a month ago that 5G is being saved for the iPhone after this one, which is expected to arrive in 2020. Barclays does say that new antenna tech is in the offing though, which might mitigate the fact that Apple's rivals will be jumping onto 5G.
