"Quality furniture for the Filipino home," is a phrase that welcomes you to the website for IKEA Philippines. It's been a long time coming, but the iconic Swedish furniture retail company is in the process of setting up locally.

The flagship store in Pasay City is close to opening its doors to the Filipino aesthetes and homemakers this year, but the website is almost fully functional for customers. Quarantine restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed the opening back a few times. This first branch in the Philippines will be the World's Largest IKEA store to date at 65,000 sqm. The title once belonged to IKEA Gwangmyeong in South Korea with 59,000 sqm.

Even for first-time furniture shoppers, IKEA is somewhat of a familiar reference in Western movies or television shows as the go-to for quality furniture you can make your own. Think of the cult-classic romantic drama film, (500) Days of Summer in 2009. This DIY reputation seems to be working for the brand that started in 1943 as its customers are as versatile as its range of products: there is something for everyone. A little-known trivia is that the name IKEA is an abbreviation for the founder's name and origins, "Ingvar Kamprad from Elmtaryd (the family farm), Agunnaryd (the local parish)." When IKEA introduced furniture in 1948, many furniture retailers in Sweden felt threatened by the company's lower prices and accessibility. The brand stood the test of time to spread out to different parts of the world.

As we wait for the physical store to open, you may start filling up your shopping list or Pinterest boards with the furniture or appliances of your dreams through a look at the IKEA Philippines website. The products are listed and priced, making for an easy browsing and budgeting experience. Unfortunately, we can't quite add to our carts just yet.

What's more: its 'Life at Home in the Philippines' section features stories from different Filipino families and how they relate to the furniture in its daily lives, a proof of its commitment to making ready-to-build furniture suited to your needs and style preferences. Get your inspiration from similar stories to your own! Applying for the IKEA family membership for some exclusive benefits and rewards may also get you interested in making home projects easier.

Some IKEA classics can be found here, so the days of looking for similar designs from other retailers may be over. For starters, the Billy bookcase is a classic IKEA shelf that fits the modern aesthetic perfectly and comes in different variations and colors. This piece would complement the bookish homeowner. If you're looking for something for lounging, the Poäng chair has been with the brand for 40 years, designed by Japanese designer Noboru Nakamura. This chair features a design that combines Japanese and Scandinavian elements, making it a lowkey statement piece. Lastly, the Malm bed is a staple in the minimalist interior design. The simple square shape of the bed frame can easily blend in with any bedroom, making the designing process easier, especially for the no-fuss living folk.
