Now You Can Download This Free Font Inspired by Jeepney Signage
Whatever your feelings are about jeepneys, they’ve certainly become an iconic part of Filipino culture and commuters’ daily experiences. Yesterday, graphic designer Aaron Amar shared his jeepney signage-inspired font, and his post quickly went viral with over 1,700 likes and 1,487 shares as of this writing.
The font is called “Quiapo Free,” and it’s available for download on Amar’s Behance page. His sample executions include the typical destinations and phrases you see on jeepneys.
As it turns out, this font was actually three years in the making. “Once upon a time, I, a frustrated typographer, was looking for something that's tatak-Pinoy in terms of typography,” Amar explains. “So nag-observe ako sa paligid ng Metro Manila then napansin ko, those signmakers have the same styles in making jeepney signs for drivers. So I tried to study how they brush it, and tried to plot it during my free time way back in 2015. Yes, hindi ko nagalaw itong personal project ko until now.”
Amar certainly wasn’t expecting his font to become such a hit. “I’m overwhelmed with joy and di ako sanay,” he says. It’s certainly cool to see the font we encounter everyday immortalized on the web, and available for anyone to use.
