The 'World's Best Single Malt Whisky' Is Japanese

Find out the winners of this year’s World Whisky Awards.

A Japanese whisky has won the award for world’s best single malt whisky at this year’s World Whisky Awards.

The Hakushu Single Malt 25-Year-Old triumphed over individual best country single malt awards to retake the trophy that it had last won in 2018.

According to the website notes, The Hakushu is “(F)rom Suntory’s mountain forest distillery, nestled deep in Mt. Kaikomagatake, Suntory Single Malt Whisky Hakushu is the fresh and gently smoky single malt whisky with herbal notes that is the revelation of Japanese single malts.”

Organized by Whisky Magazine, this year’s World Whisky Awards were a decidedly low-key affair owing to the worldwide therat of the coronavirus. The awards were announced via the social media channels of Whisky Magazine instead of at a gala dinner.
