Ateneo Leads Philippine Universities at Global Impact Rankings

The latest edition of the Times Higher Education's (THE) Impact Rankings 2021 are out. Since 2019, the list has assessed the societal impact and sustainability of universities all over the world. This year, the ranking included 1,115 universities from 94 countries and regions.

Being a part of the table puts the five universities among the world's leading institutions making a postive impact on society. The University of Manchester in the U.K. led the ranking, followed by three Australian universities University of Sydney, RMIT University, and La Trobe University.

In Asia, Thailand's Chulalongkorn led the region after ranking at 23. While five Philippine universities ranked in the list. Ateneo de Manila University led the country as it landed at the 201-300 group. The De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Mapua University followed at the third edition of the table.

"Ateneo de Manila's noteworthy performance in the 2021 THE Impact Rankings—its initial outing, to be precise—shows that our University can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world's top institutions when it comes to actual, real-world impact," said Fr. Roberto Yap SJ, university president. "THE Impact Rankings are really consistent with our identity and mission. The SDGs on Health, Sustainability, Peace and Justice, and Partnerships really resonate with who we are and what we do."

In a press release, THE explained that how it arrived at the results: "We use carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching."

To evaluate university performance, THE used the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals such as no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, and more, to name a few.
