UP Is No Longer the Top University in the Country

According to the latest THE world rankings, at least.

How's the battle of Katipunan going? Apparently, the University of the Philippines (UP) has now lost the title of the "best university in the Philippines" as the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) takes its place in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking.

The THE World University Rankings is an annual list that includes thousands of universities across hundreds of countries and regions. Said to be the biggest university rankings globally, this year's list had about 1,799 entries. Each university was ranked based on its teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlook.

“This year’s ranking analyzed over 121 million citations across more than 15.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 40,000 scholars globally. Overall, we collected over 680,000 datapoints from more than 2,500 institutions that submitted data,” said THE.

For universities in the Philippines, Ateneo is ranked in the 351 to 400 bracket while UP is placed in the 801 to 1,000. UP had consistently sat atop the Philippine university rankings for the past few years. In 2021, the university was in the 601 to 800 bracket.

Mapua University and De La Salle University each made the rankings, as well. The former was in the 1,201 to 1,500 bracket while the latter was in the 1,501+ bracket.

Meanwhile, the University of Oxford has been named the top university in the world for the seventh year in a row. It is followed by Harvard University and the University of Cambridge.
