Data provider Times Higher Education has released their 2019 World University Rankings and only two Philippine institutions made the list: the University of the Philippines and the De La Salle University.

Placing in the 501-600 range, the University of the Philippines moves up from their 2018 ranking of 601-800. La Salle, meanwhile, placed in the 801-1000 spot. UP first placed on the list in 2017 (>800) while this is the first time DLSU made it to the list.

Top five schools are University of Oxford (United Kingdom), University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), Stanford University (United States), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (United States), and California Institute of Technology (United States).

Times Higher Education is one of three major companies that rank universities globally. For their rankings, ninety percent of their criteria is dedicated to teaching, research, and research output. Institutions are automatically taken off consideration if they do not teach an undergraduate level or if their research output falls below a certain threshold.

In the meantime, British-based Quacquarelli Symonds, which also put out its university rankings in July, listed the University of the Philippines (384), Ateneo de Manila University (651-700), De La Salle University (801-1000), and University of Santo Tomas (810-1000).

The biggest chunk of QS's criteria falls on academic reputation (40%). QS ranked MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Caltech, and Oxford as their top five.

In the meantime, the Academic Ranking of World Universities, otherwise known as Shanghai Ranking, has no Philippine institutions in their most recent list.
