Filipino Values, Parol, and Other Details You May Have Missed From Disney's 2020 Christmas Ad
Before the virus, Philippine malls blared Chirstmas carols as early as August, and by the time September rolled in, bauble-studded trees were up. Though COVID-19 will inevitably change the world's longest Christmas celebration, the folks over at Disney U.K. paid homage to Filipino traditions in a heartwarming holiday advert.
The short opens with palm trees lining the shore, and as the camera pans down, countless parols hang across the sky, illuminating a 1940s scene filled with karitelas and old houses. A young girl receives a Mickey Mouse doll that stands the test of time, as she carries this with her to foreign lands until 2005.
A moving song entitled "Love Is A Compass" sung by U.K. artist Griff soars throughout the video, which shows how the holiday tradition of parol-making finds its way to the present thousand of miles away from home, and lives on through our loved ones.
