Be More Pacific co-owner Giovan Cuchapin said the lumpia-eating challenge started last year as a way to bring people together to enjoy Filipino food and culture, as well as help drum up business for the restaurant industry pummeled by the effects of the pandemic.
“Last year, businesses were just kind of creeping out of COVID,” Cuchapin told local news network KPRC 2 Click2Houston. “We’re still kind of creeping out of there, especially with the restaurant businesses. We’re just doing our part to help everybody out and to get out of that funk and get everybody where they need to be.”
Much like the more popular hotdog-eating contests, participants had 10 minutes to consume as many lumpias as they could.
The big winner was a guy named Chris Nguyen who ended up scarfing down 52 of the tasty lumpias.
