Malabon Zoo Needs Your Help to Keep Its Animals Alive

Whether or not you believe in zoos, know that it's never as simple as setting animals free. Captive animals need to be retrained if they are to make it in the wild. More often than not, it's more cost-effective to keep them in enclosures.

Zoos are some of the businesses affected by the community quarantine. With people staying indoors, there have been no visitors hence no ticket sales and no income. Just last week, Avilon Zoo in Rizal launched a crowdfunding campaign to help take care of its animals, and this week, the 30-year-old Malabon Zoo followed suit.

Malabon Zoo owner Manny Tangco, 63, has been spending his savings and borrowing money from relatives to keep his animals alive. "We thought that the lockdown would last around two months. With my savings and borrowings from relatives, we knew we could survive the two months but I was wrong,” said Tangco to the Manila Times.

Tangco has even resorted to hanging a banner outside the zoo asking for donations. Though he confesses to feeling ashamed for asking for help, Tangco has no choice. He told the Inquirer that the animals are a priority and his "number one love." Malabon Zoo is known for its tigers, lions, and bears, all of which consume seven to 10 kilos of meat.
