Every year, many establishments try to one-up each other when it comes to holiday decorations and promotions. Christmas is one of the biggest seasons of the year, and companies understandably want to attract as many people—a.k.a. customers—to patronize their products and services.

There’s nothing wrong with this practice—it’s just good business—but it’s nice when these companies integrate a “giving back” component to their campaigns. Besides the obvious good of sharing their blessings with the less fortunate, the practice underscores the real spirit of the season.

In the hospitality business, tree-lighting ceremonies have become common events to help usher in the season. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, hotels organize festive programs to show off intricately decorated trees and launch special holiday promotions. Two of the city’s hotels have done so in the last couple of weeks, while also including a CSR component that helps make these events more meaningful.

The Marriott Group launched a unique six-day tree-lighting event for all its properties in the country. After events in Sheraton Mactan, Marriott Clark, Courtyard by Marriott Iloilo City, and Sheraton Manila Bay, the group held back-to-back ceremonies at its two properties in the capital: Sheraton Hotel in Manila and Marriott Hotel Manila.

The Marriott Group included a slew of CSR initiatives to make the celebrations more meaningful. For “Paskonstelasyon: The Charity Ornaments,” paper cutouts of images of different parol designs can be purchased at Marriott Bakery for only P150 per piece. Visitors and guests at the hotel can buy the ornaments and hang them on the 20-feet Christmas tree at Marriott Hotel’s lobby. All proceeds will go to Save the Children Philippines.

Another initiative called “Paskonstelasyon: The Art of Giving” is a curated art exhibit at Marriott Hotel’s The Link and Sheraton Manila Hotel’s Mezzanine featuring works by medical doctors. Proceeds from the sold art pieces will go towards a fund for the AV Fistula Creation Medical Mission of the RCPOM for dialysis patients from different towns in Luzon. A portion of funds raised will also support the causes of Save the Children (STC) Philippines and Pasay Social Welfare and Development Department (PSWDD).

“Paskonstelasyon: The Golden Santa Story,” is a story especially written by an associate from Manila Marriott Hotel for a storytelling and gingerbread-making activity for the kids of SCT and PSWDD. Volunteers from Manila Marriott Hotel, Sheraton Manila Hotel, Courtyard by Marriott Iloilo, Sheraton Cebu Mactan and club members of the RCPOM helped facilitate the event attended by over 30 kids.

Finally, the hotel group’s “My Love Dish: Meal for Two” CSR promo has been extended until February 2023. For every order of Club Sandwich in the Great Room, a child under the custody of PSWDD gets to have three meals a day.

Seda Hotel Vertis North

Seda Hotel Vertis North in Quezon City likewise held its tree-lighting ceremony in mid-November. In addition to the actual lighting and a festive spread of holiday eats, the property under the Ayala Group highlighted its continuing partnership with Smile Train, a charity that helps provide corrective surgery for children with cleft lips and palates.

“Smile Train has been fortunate to have been chosen by Seda Hotels and AyalaLand Hotels and Resorts Corporation as its partner charity for the holiday season since 2017,” said Kimmy Coseteng-Flaviano, Smile Train’s vice president for Southeast Asia. “Through this partnership, over 100 children and adults born with a cleft have received life-changing surgery and care—giving them new smiles and second chances at life. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we know there is much more we need to do. Thousands of Filipino children still need your help.”

“It is the hotel’s first time again after two years to celebrate such a joyous occasion," said Seda Vertis North’s General Manager, Christian Pirodon. "We are all happy to have you here with us as we usher in the upcoming holiday season, enjoying over delicious food and refreshing drinks specially prepared by our culinary team.” Pirodon also expects the hotel to be hustling and bustling this season, coming from two years of intimate Christmas gatherings.
