When Chris Evans posted an emotional farewell to Captain America and the Marvel Cinematic Universe on his final day shooting Avengers 4, it seemed like his time with the character had come to an end.

"Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor," he wrote. "To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful."

Along with that, he'd more or less confirmed to The New York Times in Maythat he'd be hanging up his red, white, and blue shield.

But, in a new interview with the Associated Press, Joe Russo, who is directing Avengers 4 alongside his brother, said these statements aren't quite what they seem.

“I think it was more emotional for him than us,” Russo said. “Only because he’s not done yet. And I don’t want explain what that means but the audience will soon understand what I’m talking about.”

Now, why would it be more emotional for Evans than for the directors? While on the surface, it seems like Russo is talking about Evans returning to play Captain America, but there might be something else going on here. As we know from the comics, Steve Rogers isn't the only man to take the mantle of Captain America. Many fans believe that Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes and Anthony Mackie's Falcon would both be worthy of picking up the shield.

So, it's possible that here, Russo could be explaining that it's emotional for Evans because he's done with the character, but for the directors, Captain America may not be done yet.
