Grogu's Origin Story Will Make Your Day

Here at Esquire, we consider any news about GroguThe Mandalorian's resident green child, AKA Baby Yoda—good news. That's why we interviewed the Grogu float from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, you know.

Now, thanks to Vanity Fair's cover story about all things Star Wars, we've learned a little bit about the creation of one mister Baby Yoda. If you'll remember, the ending of The Mandalorian's pilot episode saw Din Djarin linking up with Grogu, kickstarting the events of the entire series. But in a different world, it might've never happened. Apparently, when the president of LucasFilm, Kathleen Kennedy, linked up Dave Feloni and Jon Favreau to discuss the initial game plan for The Mandalorian, there was only one major point of contention: the kiddo. “It gave us some pause,” Kennedy said. “[Favreau] and Dave debated that quite ferociously.”

Favreau was in favor of Baby Yoda's inclusion in The Mandalorian. Feloni definitely was not.“Honestly, it’s something I never would’ve done because Yoda is Yoda,” Filoni told Vanity Fair. “I think people now look back and think it was like a slam dunk, but we were very cautious... The amount of measuring, especially in the first season, for how we were framing this kid took a lot of effort.”

Here's the best part. Even beyond the debate of Grogu's very inclusion in The Mandalorian, there were, as you'd expect, a wild amount of ideas for the toddler's look. “He had kind of a goofy, ugly look," Favreau said. "We didn’t want him too cute.” Too cute? There's a Grogu you can make at Build-A-Bear! Don't act like the little guy was intentionally made ugly. We love him just the way he is. All's well that ends well, though. While we're at it, good vibes abound, watch this montage of the green guy's antics in The Mandalorian. It'll make your day. We promise.
