Austin Butler Beat Out Miles Teller and Harry Styles To Star As Elvis In Baz Luhrmann's Biopic
Elvis has entered the building. According to reports from Deadline, the upcoming Elvis Presley biopic from Baz Luhrmann has found its star. Austin Butler beat out quite a field of candidates to be cast as the music legend. He'll star alongside Tom Hanks, who has already been cast as Colonel Tom Parker, Presley's manager for over two decades.
The announcement comes after a high profile casting search that considered actors Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, and Harry Style for the role. While most of Butler's work has consisted of shows on teen-focused networks like The CW and Nickelodeon, he made his Broadway debut last year in The Iceman Cometh to critical acclaim. The 27-year-old actor also has small roles in The Dead Don't Die and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
"I had heard about Austin Butler from his stand-out role opposite Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway," Luhrmann told Deadline, in a statement. "Through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures."
According to Deadline, the unnamed Elvis biopic will focus on the singer's meteoric rise and the beginnings of his career all the way through the long-running relationship he had with Parker. Now that the film has its Elvis, shooting is scheduled to start soon in Australia with Luhrmann directing. Add Butler to Classic Rock Cinematic Universe—he's earned it.
