Bridgerton Casts Its Female Lead For Season 2 of Netflix Hit Series
Kate has been cast. Simone Ashley has landed the coveted role of Kate Sharma, the female lead of season two of the Netflix hit series Bridgerton. Ashley will star across Jonathon Bailey, who plays Anthony Bridgerton, the romantic interest of Sharma. After playing a supporting role in season one, Bailey will be bumped up to the male lead in season two.
The regency-era period series is based on the book series of the same name written by Julia Quinn. After Shondaland chose to adapt the books into a Netflix series, the screenwriters opted to introduce Black and colored characters in Shonda Rhimes' version of the regency era. Season two will reimagine the book character Kate Sheffield as Kate Sharma, a headstrong woman of Indian descent.
Bridgerton is currently Netflix's biggest series to date, beating out the likes of The Witcher and The Queen's Gambit for the top spot.
Bridgerton has become an unofficial springboard catapulting new and relatively unknown actors to stardom. As each season is expected to feature different male and female leads, Bailey and Ashley will succeed Rege-Jean Page and Phoebe Dynevor, who have become household names thanks to the show.
The British-Indian actress is no stranger to Netflix. You might have recognized Ashley from her role in season one and two of another Netflix hit, Sex Education, as the vapid teenager Olivia. She also appeared in Broadchurch and Detective Pikachu.
