Every DC Blockbuster You Can Watch on HBO Go Philippines in Preparation for the Snyder Cut
The Snyder Cut is almost upon us. The long-awaited four-hour director’s cut will drop on HBO Go in the Philippines to the delight of DC fans nationwide. It’s been a while since most of us have seen the first Justice League, and with good reason. No one wants to go endure two hours of that again. But you can rewatch a number of other DC films in preparation for the Snyder Cut release on March 18.
Here’s a rundown of all the DC blockbusters you can catch in chronological order on HBO Go. Brush up on your DC knowledge and start binging.
Pre-Justice League Era
1| Wonder Woman
Taking place during World War I, about a century before the events of the Snyder Cut, Wonder Woman is the second solo movie for a member of the Justice League. Wonder Woman 1984 is not yet on HBO Go, but the first film is enough to act as a refresher on the beloved warrior hero.
2| Man of Steel
Superman’s 2013 solo film was the first to be released in the DC Extended Universe but the third in terms of chronology. It’s also the first DCEU film to introduce Snyder as its architect. As far as backstories go, Man of Steel paints a more mature and grand picture of Superman and sets the stage for all the succeeding films in the DCEU.
3| Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Also directed by Snyder, Dawn of Justice is the immediate predecessor of Justice League and the events of this film are integral to the direction of the Snyder Cut. As we all know, Superman is dead by the time the events of Justice League take place, so it might be wise to revisit the film that led up to Superman’s heroic death.
4| Suicide Squad
The Suicide Squad is formed following the events of Superman’s death in Dawn of Justice. Bruce Wayne even makes an appearance in a mid-credits scene where Amanda Waller hands him files on all the members of the Justice League, who haven’t even met each other yet. The Snyder Cut should take place just after Suicide Squad and just before Shazam!
Post-Justice League Movie
5| Shazam!
Shazam! Is probably the most kid-friendly movie and superhero in the DCEU. He’s been described as the goofier version of Superman, who was actually supposed to make a cameo in the film before plans fell through.
6| Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn
The film about Harley Quinn’s glorious emancipation takes place four years after Suicide Squad, so it’s most likely after the events of Justice League as well. Batman is mentioned a couple of times in the film, most notably as the “hunky Wayne guy.”
Earth-3?
7| Joker
Walter Hamada, president of DC Films and co-runner of DCEU, has said that the DCEU is made up of a multiverse, which explains the various reincarnations of Batman. While the main DCEU films like Wonder Woman and Dawn of Justice take place on Earth-1, the upcoming Batman film with Robert Pattinson will take place on Earth-2. With that, we’ll assume that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker exists on Earth-3?
Non-DCEU But Based on DC Comics
8| Batman Begins
Christopher Nolan’s award-winning Batman trilogy does not actually tie into the DC Extended Universe, nor is it under DC Films. However, the films are based on DC Comics and are still considered part of the hyper-extended DC universe by fans. In our minds, we’ll just say it takes place on Earth-4.
9| The Dark Knight
Joker has been an iconic figure in Batman’s story for decades, but it wasn’t until Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning portrayal of the villain that Joker was catapulted into mainstream pop culture. The Dark Knight might not have anything to do with the DCEU, but it’s still a hell of a good film.
10| The Dark Knight Rises
Two DC superheroes unite in the last installment of Nolan’s Batman trilogy: Catwoman and Batman, the latter of which is still reeling from Rachel’s death in The Dark Knight.
11| The Losers
Based on the comics under Vertigo/DC Comics, The Losers was released in 2010, just a year before one member of the cast appeared in a little Marvel film called Captain America: The First Avenger. That’s right, Chris Evans starred in this DC Comics-based film before he entered the Marvel fold. Another Marvel hero starring in The Losers is Zoe Saldana, aka Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy.
Bonus:
12| Aquaman
This essential DC film is no longer streaming on HBO Go, but you can catch it on Netflix. Aquaman takes place after Justice League, and Aquaman 2 is already in the works.
