Erik Matti Says Darna Is Going to Be a "Serious, Real, Superhero Movie"
While movie fans are busy lining up to watch Erik Matti's action-thriller BuyBust, the director himself has been working on his next project: Darna. Aside from the confirmation that Liza Soberano is set to star in the latest adaptation, the details of the film have been kept under wraps. But Matti has new updates about the project that are sure to get fans excited.
In a report by Push, Matti says that Darna is going to be "probably five times bigger [than] BuyBust." It'll be bigger not just in terms of difficulty. "Lahat. 'Yong size, 'yong scale, 'yong bigat ng pelikula, 'yong laki ng pelikula."
He says that he wants to do the movie in the right way and that means not adding a bunch of comedic factors. "Sabi ko, lagi na lang pag gumawa tayo ng ambitious na project, lalagyan na lang ng sobrang daming comedy kasi hindi magawa yung ambisyon ng movie, 'di ba? So 'yong costume gagawin na lang parang kengkoy." That's why he, ABS-CBN, and Star Cinema have all agreed to make the film "a serious, real, superhero movie." He adds, "So, gano'n 'yong atake, na parang 'Let's plan this right, let's rehearse it, let Liza train.'" Soberano has previously posted photos doing various workouts for her role.
While official announcements haven't been made yet, Matti also confirms that they've finally cast Darna's nemesis Valentina, as well as her ever-reliable sibling-slash-sidekick Ding. "Kumpleto na ang cast. Hindi ko lang puwedeng i-reveal." As for Darna's famous costume, Matti says it can't be different from the ones that have been worn before.
There's no release date for the movie yet. But if Matti's great work on previous films like On the Job, Honor Thy Father, and BuyBust are any indication, movie buffs are definitely in for a treat when they finally see Darna on the big screen.
