History Buffs, Get Ready For This Free WWII Film Marathon by Filipinas Heritage Library
As the new year approaches, so does the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Manila. The year 2020 will mark 75 years since the Battle of Manila ended the three-year reign of the former Empire of Japan during World War 2.
To commemorate the event, Filipinas Heritage Library is holding its WWII Film Marathon on November 23 at MyCinema in Greenbelt 3, Makati City, where history buffs will be able to watch and remember the brightest and darkest moments of the Second World War.
The best part? It’s free. The screenings have limited seating, so audience members will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
The marathon will screen three Filipino WWII films. The first, Honor: The Legacy of Jose Abad Santos (2018), follows the life and legacy of the Filipino war hero and Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos. Santos also happens to be memorialized on the P1,000 peso note for resisting Japanese occupation until his execution by Japanese forces. The full-length documentary was directed by Bani Logroño.
The second film will be Rescue in the Philippines (2013) by Russell Hodge and Cynthia Scott. The documentary tells the untold story of the Jews who escaped the Nazis and found refuge in the Philippines. It follows the tale of the Frieder brothers, President Manuel Quezon, Paul McNutt, Dwight Eisenhower, and over 1,200 Jews.
The last film to be screened during the marathon will be Days of the Crimson Sun: The Re-telling of the Battle of Manila by Liliane Managan. The 1995 documentary was released 50 years after the battle ended, and recounts the battle from the perspective of its survivors.
