House of the Dragon Season 2 Could Be Years Away

House of the Dragon Season 1 was arguably one of the best shows of the year, but it might be a year (or even years) before we get Season 2. Here’s everything you need to know about House of the Dragon Season 2 before it drops.

Who’s Coming Back?

Based on the ending of Season 1, we’ll be seeing the returning of most characters from the first season as most of them are still alive (for now). Expect to see plenty of Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best), Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Criston Cole and (Fabian Frankel).

Also expect the younger characters to play a larger role in the Dance of Dragons: King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carey), Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), Queen Helaena (Pia Saban), Prince Jacaerys (Harry Collett), Baela Targaryen (Bethany Anthonia), and Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell).

After their tragic deaths in Season 1, we sadly won’t be seeing Viserys (Paddy Considine) or Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) again. But we might get to see the youngest son of Viserys and Alicent, Prince Daeron, who’ll play a major part in the field battles of the Dance of Dragons.

Before Season 1 ended, Jacaerys made his way north to rally allies for the Blacks, so other characters we will be meeting in Season 2 are Cregan Stark, Lord of Winterfell, and Jeyne Arryn, Lady of the Vale.

Where Will House the Dragon Season 2 Take Place?

Season 1 was an especially insular season, focusing almost solely on King’s Landing and Dragonstone. As the war unravels, HOTD will be taking to the far reaches of Westeros as the Seven Kingdoms splits in half.

We already know we’re going to Winterfell and the Vale in Season 2, but we’ll likely also be seeing Harrenhal and the rest of the Riverlands. The Reach is the location of countless battles, but those might not take place until Season 3. Perhaps we’ll even get a glimpse of the Hightower and Old Town before the series ends.

What Will Happen in Season 2 of House the Dragon?

Season 1 acted as the prologue to the war, building up the tension and breaking down the back story of the opposing factions. War is nothing but carnage if you don’t understand the motivations, so HOTD made sure that viewers understood the cause of the war before officially starting it.

Season 1 ended with Viserys dead, Aegon and Rhaenyra grappling for the crown, and Rhaenyra learning of her son’s death at the hands of Aemond. Episode 10 is the turning point for the show as the Blacks and Greens transition from a war of words to a war of fire and blood. Suffice to say, get ready for real bloodshed in Season 2.

We’ll likely be seeing even more major character deaths, bloody battles, dragon fights, politicking, betrayal, and more. Without spoiling anything from the book, we do know from Episode 10 that Daemon will be making his way to the Harrenhal to secure the Riverlands and Jacaerys is on his way to the Eyrie and Winterfall to secure the Vale and the North.

When Will House the Dragon Season 2 Come Out?

House of the Dragon Season 2 was only given the green light after the premiere of Season 1. As such, the season is still in its early development stages and filming has only just started. Considering the scope of the material, the extravagant sets and costumes, and all the CGI, it might take over a year before we see the next season.

We’d wager that Season 2 could come out by late 2023, but 2024 seems more probable.

That’s quite a while away, so until then, you can rewatch House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones on HBO GO in the Philippines.
