Idris Elba is set to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in the Suicide Squad sequel.

Smith dropped out of the DC Comics movie due to scheduling conflicts (covering yourself in blue paint is pretty time-consuming), leaving many to wonder if the character would be discarded altogether.

But now Variety reports that Elba will take up the role. It’s not yet known whether he’ll be joined by Margot Robbie or Jared Leto, but it’s confirmed that former Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn will write and direct the sequel. It’s set for release on 6 August, 2021.

Will Smith isn’t the only big name to bow out. Joel Kinnaman will not reprise the role of Rick Flagg, according to Heroic Hollywood, and former director David Ayer will have no part in the project following bad reviews on his financially successful first instalment.

Elba is also starring in a new Netflix series, Turn up Charlie, which he co-created with Gary Reich. The British actor plays failing DJ Charlie, who becomes a ‘manny’ at the request of his famous best friend. It’s set for release this month.

One project he won't be appearing in any time soon is James Bond. Speaking to theDaily Mail, Elba revealed that he wouldn't like to be "defined" by the character.
