Surprise: James Cameron Has Finished Filming Avatar 2
Hollywood’s winningest director James Cameron, who created two of the industry’s highest-grossing films of all time (Titanic, Avatar) revealed that he has finished filming the sequel to Avatar.
It is important to note that since its release in 1997, Titanic remained the world’s highest-grossing film of all time, which raked a total of $2,195,169,696 in worldwide ticket sales. This record would only be broken 12 years later in 2009 by yet another of Cameron’s creations, Avatar, which raked in $2,790,439,000.
It took 10 years for another movie to dislodge Avatar from the top spot, which is now held by Avengers: End Game (2019), whose total ticket sales is $2,797,800,564—overtaking Cameron by a hairline.
Cameron may soon reclaim that top position once again with Avatar 2.
Speaking to Arnold Schwarzenegger in a live Zoom conference, Cameron revealed that filming for Avatar 2 is now complete. But what came as a bigger surprise was when he said Avatar 3 is already 95 percent done.
“We’re 100 percent complete on Avatar 2 and we’re sort of 95 percent complete on Avatar 3,” said Cameron.
Avatar 2 Release Date
According to Cameron, although the production has been finished, the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the release of the film.
“Well, [COVID-19] hit us like it hit everybody,” Cameron said about nine minutes into the video below. “Hit us hard. We lost about four and a half months of production. As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of .”
James Cameron Praises New Zealand for COVID Response Amid Filming
Avatar 3 is being filmed in New Zealand, and Cameron is grateful the country has stayed on top of the pandemic.
“So where we are right now, I’m down in New Zealand shooting. We’re shooting the remainder of the live-action. We’ve got about 10 percent left to go,” said Cameron.
“We’re very lucky in that we chose this as our production site years ago,” he said said. “We made the first film here in New Zealand and it turns out to be, it’s ranked either the first or second-best country in the world for its [COVID-19] response. Sometimes Germany is in the number one spot, sometimes New Zealand is in the number one spot. But we’re actually able to operate.”
Cameron described working in New Zealand allowed the crew to live a “more or less normal life,” and that certainly has helped the team finish the films.
