James Gunn Is Set to Direct Superman: Legacy, And We Have a Lot of Thoughts

Well, well, well, if it isn't the dude who wanted to outshine Snyder on the same day. Just kidding. We love an irreverent filmmaker. DC Studios overlord James Gunn, who serves as its chairman and CEO, has finally confirmed that he's directed the reboot of the Superman franchise with Superman: Legacy. He did so in dramatic fashion, really.
Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized. pic.twitter.com/ohQNV8nI4g

Gunn has been tagged as the writer while partner Peter Safran will produce the film. According to the synopsis, Superman: Legacy will tell the story of "Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Gunn would continued: "...a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

The internet, of course, responded accordingly:
“James Gunn can’t direct a serious scene without making a joke”

James Gunn talking about his late father and his love for Superman and then some people responding with shit like "he is just doing this to shade Snyder-con" might be the most online way of thinking ever. Go outside I beg. pic.twitter.com/mMzu78wT2b

James Gunn did not deliver 4 straight bangers just for people to act like him directing Superman is the worst idea ever. While his movies have been comedic and raunchy, they never failed at the emotional and important moments. pic.twitter.com/vB4y3NBFjg

James Gunn says he is directing ‘SUPERMAN: LEGACY’ because “I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage - how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.” pic.twitter.com/vH7FrQ9rxH

James Gunn betting on himself to kick off the DCU and DC Studios the right way is precisely why Superman: Legacy is in great hands.

I strongly believe we are about to get the greatest Superman film ever made. pic.twitter.com/f3XYo5Ml9G
The Superman reboot will be part of Phase 1, which the studio has labeled as “Gods and Monsters.”
While the cast hasn't been announced just yet, we apparently already have a global theatrical release date: it's on July 11, 2025.
