James Gunn Is Set to Direct Superman: Legacy, And We Have a Lot of Thoughts

Well, well, well, if it isn't the dude who wanted to outshine Snyder on the same day. Just kidding. We love an irreverent filmmaker. DC Studios overlord James Gunn, who serves as its chairman and CEO, has finally confirmed that he's directed the reboot of the Superman franchise with Superman: Legacy. He did so in dramatic fashion, really.

Gunn has been tagged as the writer while partner Peter Safran will produce the film. According to the synopsis, Superman: Legacy will tell the story of "Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Gunn would continued: "...a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

The internet, of course, responded accordingly:

The Superman reboot will be part of Phase 1, which the studio has labeled as “Gods and Monsters.”

While the cast hasn't been announced just yet, we apparently already have a global theatrical release date: it's on July 11, 2025.
