Seems like only yesterday we were all watching Jo Koy’s hilarious standup clips on Facebook. Now, he’s got three Netflix specials and an upcoming movie with Universal Pictures based on his life story.
We’re sure his mom is proud of him—and basking in all her new Louis Vuitton bags.
The upcoming movie, titled Easter Sunday, will follow Jo Koy as he attends a typical Filipino family gathering on Easter Sunday. We don’t know anything else about the plot, but every Filipino gathering is bound to be eventful so expect hilarity and chaos to ensue.
Universal Pictures has finally given us a date for the upcoming film: April 1. But don’t worry, it’s not an April Fool’s Joke—it’s the real deal.
The film is directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (The Dukes of Hazard, Super Troopers) and written by comedian Ken Cheng (Sin City Saints).
Jo Koy stars as himself, Josep, accompanied by Filipino-American trailblazer Tia Carrere who will star as his aunt, Tita Theresa. In the Philippines, Grammy-winner Carrere is best known for her album Dream, which went platinum in the ‘90s.
Also joining the cast as Koy’s cousin is Filipino-American Eugene Cordero, who you might recognize as Pillboi from The Good Place and Casey from Disney Plus’ Loki. In what’s looking to be a Fil-Am gathering, Easter Sunday has also cast Rodney To (Parks and Recreation, Good Girls) as Tito Arthur, Eva Noblezada (Yellow Rose, Miss Saigon) as Ruth, Brandon Wardwell (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Junior, and Elena Juatco (Schitt’s Creek, Jann) as Regina. Subic native and Tony and Golden Globe nominee Lou Diamond Philips (La Bamba, The King and I, Stand and Deliver) is also starring as himself.
If that wasn’t star-studded enough for you, Easter Sunday has also rounded up the top comedians of the moment to join the upcoming film. Jimmy Yang from Crazy Rich Asians will also star, as well as the hysterical Tiffany Hadish. WandaVision’s Asif Ali is also staring as Tony Daytona.
No word yet on how it’ll be made available to Philippine moviegoers, but fingers crossed it shows in local cinemas, too.
