Lady Gaga had been wanting to play Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker musical sequel, according to a June report from Variety. She announced her official casting in a teaser on her Twitter account with Joker: Folie à Deux, set to be released on Oct. 4, 2024. It also featured "Cheek to Cheek," a song she famously covered with the beloved Tony Bennett.
The term "Folie à Deux" is associated with a form of shared delusional disorder. It's the Joker's best friend, after all, apart from Quinn and, well Batman.
Quinn, who was first introduced to us in Batman: The Animated Series back in the '90s, is one of Warner Bros. and DC's most enduring characters. In the past, we saw Margot Robbie play the character in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and more. On HBO, on the other hand, we can hear Kaley Cuoco voicing Quinn in the animated series.
Todd Phillips, who previously directed comedies like Road Trip, Old School, and the Hangover trilogy, directed and produced Joker in 2019. The film went on to become a box office hit and an awards season darling, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and racking in 11 Academy Award nominations. It grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
Phoenix also won his first-ever Academy Award for Best Actor with his perfromance in the film. Lady Gaga, meanwhile, starred in House of Gucci and the 2018 A Star Is Born remake alongside Bradley Cooper. She earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of singer-songwriter Ally Maine. Gaga won the Oscar for Best Original Song with "Shallow."
