Long-forgotten, ambling-toward-cult-classic superhero Captain Planet could be brought back from a shallow nineties grave thanks to famous lover of the planet, Leonardo DiCaprio.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leo's production company, Appian Way, has bought the rights to the environmental-themed superhero franchise, which seems a natural fit for a man who loves the environment... and models, and superyachts, and Martin Scorsese, and models.
If you need reminding: Captain Planet and the Planeteers was a TV show that aired in the early 90s, centering around a group of teenagers with special powers who could summon a green-haired superhero called Captain Planet to deal with environmental disasters.
So far, so apathy, but what is potentially intriguing is that sources say the story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him. Like The Wrestler, but with oil spills and magic?
But let us put on record that the bar set by Funny or Die is ridiculously high. Unparalleledly so. We're-still-chanting-TreeTreeTree-years-later kind of high. We-still-have-nightmares-about-a-smurfy-Don-Cheadle kind of standards.
