Lingua Franca tells the tale of a transgender OFW who faces the everyday struggle of being an undocumented migrant worker in the U.S.A. Set in Brooklyn, New York, the film follows Olivia (played by Sandoval), a caregiver to an elderly woman, as she looks for a way to stay in America while simultaneously falling in love with Alex, her employer’s grandson who is played by Eamon Farren (who played Cahir in The Witcher).

The plot will hit close to home for many, as Olivia’s shoulders are heavy with the responsibilities of sending money back home to the Philippines, finding a way to avoid getting kicked out of the country, and finding love in a big city as a transgender person.

It’s been described as a “tender and lyrical” transgender love story by Rolling Stone and “a gorgeous and delicate picture, an understated work that opens a window on an intimate world” by Time.

The film has garnered numerous recognitions since its release at various film festivals, including the Molodist International Film Festival, Bentonville Film Festival, Pacific Meridian International Film Festival, and Chéries-Chéris in Paris.

TBA Studios is bringing Lingua Franca to the Philippines on November 6, when it will be screened for the first time at Cinema ’76.
