There's only one Filipino film that's always been included on lists of the world's best, like the book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. Even celebrated auteur Martin Scorsese himself praised director Lino Brocka and cinematographer Mike de Leon for their work on Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag.

You might have already read the book written by Edgardo M. Reyes that the film was based on. But it's not every day you can catch the restored film on the big screen in all its 4K-resolution glory. In celebration of Brocka's birthday, Cinema Centenario will be screening Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag and his other masterpiece, Insiang this April for only P200.

Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag follows the life and struggles of Julio (Bembol Roco) as he moves to Manila from Marinduque to start anew. But he soon realizes the city life isn't what it seems and even his childhood love Ligaya (Hilda Koronel) looks to have fallen into the trap as well.

Another one of Brocka's finest works is Insiang, a drama that follows Hilda Koronel as the titular character. Insiang is always under the scrutiny of her mother Tonya (Mona Lisa). But things get worse when Tonya's much-younger lover Dado (Ruel Vernal) rapes Insiang and Insiang is left by her own lover Bebot (Rex Cortez). Fun fact: Insiang is the first Filipino movie to be shown at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
