The Role of Master Pakku Has Been Cast in the Live-Action Adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender

He's set to play the role of the second-most powerful waterbender in the series.

A. Martinez is set to play the role of grumpy, adamant, and extremely potent waterbender Master Pakku, the second-most powerful waterbender in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Sorry guys, the title of "most powerful" rightfully belongs to Katara.

The 73-year-old actor had no idea what kind of role he was getting into. On social media, Martinez replied to fans asking him about how he got the role.

The Last Airbender Is a Filipino-Canadian

"When I first got offered this part, I didn't know who I'd be playing, and I was wondering why would have picked me out of all the guys they could have chosen. Then I saw the drawing of the man. All my life I've been told that I look too intense," said Martinez.

"'Why won't you just lighten up for a change, dude?'" he explained, recalling how people would nudge him to lighten up his austere manner.

"First time ever that my face landed me the gig," he added.

According to Martinez, he finds it magical to be able to play the role of the stern and ruthless waterbending master.

"Playing him, in sync with the actors playin g the leads, was literally magical. Never felt better about the vibes on a set, and I've been around for a long, long time."

Master Pakku is the chief waterbending master of the Northern Water Tribe. He left the Southern Water Tribe after the woman he's in love with rejected his advances. That woman turned out to be Gran-Gran, Katara's grandmother.

As a teacher and influential member of the Northern Water Tribe, Master Pakku is inconveniently strict, has an unyielding personality, and a very high sense of pride matched by his mastery of bending the water element.

Netflix's live-action series is also starring Filipino-Canadian Gordon Cormier as Aang, the Avatar and the last airbender. In August 2021, Netflix revealed the actors who will play the roles of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko.
