Midsommar Was Already Terrifying. Then Fans Found Subliminal Dead Faces In The Movie

The corpses are hidden throughout the film, if you're brave enough to look closely.

Midsommar was a thoroughly frightening movie. Maybe it wasn’t quite the carnival of terror that director Ari Aster’s debut Hereditary was, but the film, which told the story of four American students’ trip to a Scandinavian sunshine murder cult, definitely packed in the scares. And as if watching an old guy’s head get bashed in with a hammer after he throws himself from a cliff isn't horrifying enough, it seems that Aster may have imbued the movie with some subliminal frights, too.

An eagle-eyed Twitter user shared a screenshot from the film earlier this week that appears to show a face embedded in the background of a scene.

The creepy visage is near the upper left corner of the forest, and is a call back to the very beginning of the film. Early on, Florence Pugh’s Dani finds her world upended in the wake of a nearly unfathomable tragedy—her mentally ill sister killing their parents and herself by funnelling car exhaust into their home. The face in the trees is that of the sister as she's found by first responders, with the exhaust tube still duct taped to her face. The whole point of Dani's trip to Sweden is the hope that it might offer a distraction from her overwhelming grief, but the face offers a creepy suggestion of the trauma that she still carries with her.

It’s not the only hidden face fans have found in the movie. Redditors spotted the actors who played her dead family members in scenes at the Hårga cult’s May Queen festival, suggesting that Dani, under the influence of some the commune's hallucinogenic beverages, has visions of her dead family members.

The film was just released on Digital and on Demand Tuesday, so fans now have a lot more opportunities to hunt for Easter eggs and hidden messages. And, if Midsommar is anything like Heriditary, it’s probably loaded with them.
