Despite support from high-profile James Bond-adjacent figures and the excellent prospect of Gillian Anderson getting stuck into the part, it seems that the idea of a Bond played by a woman hasn't gained much traction with Bond fans.

According to a poll of more than 2,000 people from around the world conducted by RadioTimes.com, more than three quarters of fans think that the spy should be played by a man.

In total, 77 per cent of all respondents said no to the idea of a woman playing Bond. British voters were even more vehemently against the idea - the no vote jumped up to 82 per cent among Bond's compatriots.

As with every slightly misconceived democratic exercise we've had to lump through in the last few years, there's a few ways of interpreting this poll. We've not got Prof John Curtice on hand to confirm or deny, but it seems reasonable to assume that the lobby against the idea of casting a woman as 007 are far, far more agitated about it and therefore likely to vote than your average person in the street who's not really fussed either way but probably makes up far more of the moviegoing public than the ultras.

Equally, if we've leaned anything from the last few years, it's that you've got to factor potential malign interference from foreign governments into any vote. This is exactly the sort of thing one keeps a troll farm ticking along for.

Either way, we already know that in the upcoming No Time To Die Lashana Lynch will play a spy who's taken on the 007 codename, and that both perennial next Bond betting frontrunner Cillian Murphy and former Bond Pierce Brosnan have thrown their weight behind a woman taking on the Bond mantle in the future.
