The Percy Jackson Disney+ Series Is Aiming For a Huge Budget to Rival WandaVision's
Rick Riordan is putting all his weight into the upcoming Percy Jackson series and he won’t stop until it gets the Disney+ treatment it deserves.
According to the author, the goal is to make the Percy Jackson and The Olympians (PJO) a quality series, meaning its budget “has to stand toe-to-toe with Disney+ hits like WandaVision and the Mandalorian.” Now that’s setting the bar high considering the shows belong to Disney’s most valuable IP: Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it looks like the author isn’t afraid to aim high.
The show hasn’t gotten the official green light yet, but according to Riordan, the Disney execs are in favor of the show.
“The pilot script has now made it through the very highest levels of Disney execs and everybody likes it. We have met with the studio heads and streaming service execs and we feel a lot of love and support from Disney, which I really appreciate,” said Riordan.
This is great news for the millions of Percy Jackson fans around the world. The best-selling book series has garnered a large and loyal fandom over the years, and as these big studios have witnessed in recent months, fandoms are a powerful ally to have. Just look at how fans pushed forward the Snyder Cut and how the MCU thrives on a huge (and satisfied) fanbase.
Even though Riordan is “optimistic” the show will happen, there are still a lot of hoops for the PJO team to jump through. But our fingers are crossed that Disney will pick it up and do justice to the books—in a way the movie adaptation definitely didn’t.
